N. Korea fires short-range cruise missiles into sea: S. Korea

South Korea’s military said Tuesday that North Korea fired several projectiles, believed to be short-range cruise missiles, into the Sea of Japan earlier in the day.

The projectiles were launched northeastward from an area near its eastern coastal town of Munchon in Kangwon Province, flying a distance of more than 150 kilometers, South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff said, adding that the firings started at around 7 a.m. and lasted for 40 minutes.

The launches came on the eve of the birthday of late North Korean founder Kim Il Sung.

The military said it is closely monitoring for possible additional launches from North Korea while continuing to gather more details.
