Tokyo has 89 new coronavirus cases, reaches a total of 773

Tokyo confirmed 89 new coronavirus cases on Friday, a metropolitan government source said, as the city continues to struggle to contain the rapid spread of the COVID-19 disease.

The new number pushed Tokyo’s total cases to 773, a day after the capital recorded its largest daily increase of 97 cases.

There are now 717 infected people who are hospitalized, nearly filling the 750 beds the capital has reserved to treat such patients.

As Tokyo continues to see double-digit increases in its daily cases, the city is planning to rent hotels to move those who are asymptomatic or have mild conditions from hospitals.

Gov. Yuriko Koike said at Friday’s press conference that the city is continuing to face a crisis where the number of infections could explode.

She also again asked residents to refrain from non-essential outings, especially at night and on weekends.
